Wow! It was a wild year! Here are some of the highlights we remember as we look back over the past 12 months.
2023 Highlight #1: ChatGPT & the AI Revolution
2023 was undoubtedly a landmark year for artificial intelligence, with ChatGPT leading the charge. This advanced AI—known for its witty conversations and deep knowledge—ends the year as a household name. It single-handedly created an entirely new marketplace just for ChatGPT prompts.
While technically ChatGPT was released to the public in late November, 2022, it didn't become a household name until January of 2023. But WOW did it take over! Nearly overnight, ChatGPT brought in over 1 million users in the first 5 days after it launched. Within the first few months, its ranks swelled to over 100 million weekly users. The language model is so good, it even fooled scientists with its ai-generated scientific articles.
In response to the flood of Chatgpt-authored works, swiftly implemented measures to prohibit the use of the bot among their users. This decisive action was taken to maintain the integrity of original thought and academic rigor in their respective environments. (Not to mention, ChatGPT's occasional tendency to hallucinate bogus facts & sources).
From assisting students in their homework to helping professionals draft emails, ChatGPT's meteoric rise in 2023 gives us a glimpse of a future where AI is the norm. Shoot, you don't even have to look far to see AI already becoming a normal offering of businesses & brands.
2023 Highlight #2: TikTok Releases the Bold Filter
In the world of online filters where a little touch-up is the norm, there's this new kid on the TikTok block that's turning heads – and faces! Yes, 2023 was the year that welcomed in the "bold glamour" filter on TikTok. It's not just any filter; it's like a magic wand for your face. It chisels your chin, beefs up those brows, smooths the skin, and gives your cheeks that 'just pinched' glow.

This isn't your typical filter that glitches when you move or gets thrown off by a hand wave. It sticks to your face like superglue, no matter how much you twist, turn, or try to trick it. This seamlessness means viewers might not even realize it's a filter at play in your videos.

Gone are the days when filters were just about adding cute panda ears or giving you cartoonish, Disney-like eyes. Today's technology has evolved to a point where it's sculpting and refining your appearance in real-time, as naturally as if it were part of you. This development is particularly alarming for tweens and teens on TikTok, who are already navigating the tricky waters of beauty standards. The line between reality and digital enhancement is blurring, and that's a cause for concern.

2023 Highlight #3: Twitter... er X?
In October 2022, Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion, priced at his initial offer of $54.20 per share, marked the beginning of a dramatic chapter for the social media giant. Musk's takeover quickly turned into a spectacle, characterized by rapid, widespread layoffs and unpredictable management decisions. One of his initial moves was to reduce the company's workforce by nearly half, a move that sent shockwaves through the tech world. Additionally, he introduced a new policy allowing users to purchase the coveted blue check mark verification for $8 a month, a significant shift in Twitter's approach to user verification. This lead to some hilarious moments on Twitter . . .
The spectacle continued into April 2023, when Twitter underwent a major rebranding, emerging as 'X'. This transition, amidst the backdrop of the earlier tumultuous changes, only added to the sense of unpredictability and spectacle that has come to define Musk's tenure as the head of the platform. So, yeah, 2023 was a big year for Twitter... er 'X.' (Pirates everywhere celebrate the name change. 🅧)
2023 Highlight #4: Beauty by Earth Gets Steamy
Beauty by Earth launched Shower Steamers in Breathe, Chill, and Burst Fall of 2023. They sold like gangbusters. Although we knew our luxurious steamers would be loved by everyone who tried them, we hadn't expected quite this much enthusiasm. Our steamers sold out 3 times in the first few months of being available.

2023 Highlight #5: Barbie Meets Oppenheimer Summer '23
In the early weeks of summer 2023, two blockbuster films opened in box offices across the USA: Oppenheimer and The Barbie Movie. Two more dissimilar films could not be imagined. Oppenheimer was dark in both subject matter and actual footage (1/2 the movie shot in black and white). Barbie, on the other hand, was colorful to the max. Images shared online humorously depicted the emotional aftermath and/or personality behind the two films. It got us seeing Barbieheimer (as we all started referring to the phenomenon) everywhere.
Just a pair of surreal houses? Nope, Barbieheimer.
A baby gender reveal? Nope, Barbieheimer.
The ingenious PR strategies of the Barbie movie only furthered this comparison. We were seeing Barbie literally everywhere: our makeup, clothing, phones, toothpaste, and even pillowcases, The speculation added an extra layer of excitement to the film releases that summer. Barbie/Oppenheimer took over the world (and a lot of funny memes were born)!
2023 Highlight #6: Prince Harry releases a tell-all book, Spare (much to his family's discomfort)
Prince Harry cast some shade on the royal family with his tell-all memoir, Spare. His revelations positively stirred the media into a frenzy & intrigue. The book is filled with personal anecdotes and never-before-heard insights into the royals. It became an instant bestseller as it offered an unprecedented glimpse into the private life and inner workings of the British monarchy.
Harry's candid reflections and sometimes critical observations about his family and their dynamics made headlines around the world, sparking debates and discussions about the royal family's role in modern society. This bold move by the Prince not only captivated the public's attention but also highlighted the ongoing tension between the traditional expectations of royal life and the desire for personal freedom and authenticity.
