It's no secret that the tanner industry is dumping JUNK in their formulas. But did you know these ingredients can have serious impacts on your health?

FEATURED IN

1. Hormonal Disruption

Most self tanners available today contain dyes—think FD&C Red No.4, Blue 1, and Yellow 5. Often, these dyes are made from petrol-derived ingredients and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially in individuals with sensitive skin. This might result in redness, itching, or rash.

2. Skin Irritation and Allergies

Ingredients like parabens, which are used as preservatives in many self tanners, have been linked to hormonal disruptions. By mimicking estrogen in the body, parabens can disrupt delicate hormonal balances and potentially lead to early puberty or even cancer.

Frequent exposure to Parabens could be, “trigger reactions such as increasing breast cell division and the growth of tumors,” according to the Scientific American. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) notes that parabens are, “linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.”

3. Potential Carcinogens

Nobody likes to think their tanner could be causing cancer, but the jury is still out. Tanner ingredients such as Parabens, synthetic dyes, fragrances, and Oxybenzone (used in tanners with sunscreen protection) have raised concerns about their potential link to cancer.

While a direct link to cancer through skin application hasn't, as of yet, been established, studies indicate the need for concern.

skin damage

4. Skin Aging and Damage

When you tan, you're trying to find that natural, beautiful glow that makes you feel confident and sexy. You know what's not sexy? Damaged dry skin. Many self tanners include alcohol in their ingredient list. Alcohol can dry out the skin, leading to dehydration and even wrinkles. Worse still, high levels of alcohol can disrupt the skin's natural barrier.

respiratory Issues

5. Respiratory Issues

Did you know even your breathing can be effected by a bad tan? It's no joke. Fragrances in self tanners, particularly when used in aerosol sprays, can contribute to respiratory issues. These fragrances are often complex mixtures of many different chemicals, some of which might be irritants or allergens. This inhalation can lead to respiratory irritation, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or allergies.

The risk is compounded by the fact that the specific chemical makeup of fragrances is usually hidden under the blanket term "fragrance" or "perfume." This makes it difficult to pinpoint which component might be causing the irritation.

Finally, a Self Tanner that's actually GOOD for skin!

I feel like this tanner is not too intense so I sometimes will do it a couple times til I reached my desired shade but I love how natural it looks. I know it can feel risky since it’s a lotion and you don’t see where you are putting it on but since it’s so natural I never have streaks! Love love I put all my friends on it :)

I love this tanner! Have been using it for years (since my first pregnancy) and there's truly nothing better on the market.

I have been an avid self-tanner user for the last 12+ years (both at home and professional spray tans) and have tried countless brands over the years. I heard about Beauty By Earth years ago and thought it was an overhyped affiliate-dominated too-good-to-be-true product, so I didn't try it. Over the years, it kept popping up as I searched for new products to try. In the last three years, I have switched almost all of my beauty products to clean products and regularly use the EWG's site to determine a product's efficacy. I knew that this product has almost no potentially hazardous ingredients and is rated a stellar 1 by EWG. Yet I couldn't believe that a product could be both CLEAN and EFFECTIVE.

I am thrilled to say I've been proven wrong. I tried the first application on my legs only as my expectations could not have been lower. I was pleasantly surprised by the results, so the following day, I reapplied to my legs (for darker color) and to the rest of my body. I am beyond impressed with the results.

The ingredients allowed in us products are insane. The eu would never allow these in their products. Google that side by side comparison of the same products sold in US vs europe... you will be totally freaked out.

I recently tried Beauty by Earth Self Tanner, and I must say, I'm impressed! As someone who prefers natural and organic products, I was delighted to find that this self-tanning lotion is made with natural ingredients. The application was smooth and easy, and the results were fantastic. The color was natural-looking and not streaky at all, giving me a healthy sun-kissed glow. What I appreciate most is that it didn't have that typical self-tanner smell; instead, it had a pleasant scent that wasn't overpowering. Plus, it moisturized my skin, leaving it soft and hydrated.

Why are dyes like these allowed in tanners?! You'd think that govenment would do a better job regulating this stuff.

I love the natural color beauty by earth's tanner leaves on my skin. Does not look orange at all! I am very fair so this product makes me look so pretty.
