Argan Oil Body Butter Recipe

Howdy Ya’ll!  I wanted to try out a recipe for an argan oil body butter.  Before today I had never made a homemade body butter, so this blog will likely have a few updates as my recipe is perfected.

Here is what you will need:

Deep Glass Bowl, Hand Mixer, Container for Storage, Organic Argan Oil, Unrefined Shea Butter and an essential oil of choice.

Depending on how much body butter you want to make, you can double or triple the recipe.

Here is the recipe:

Better Shea Butter

1. Add to your bowl 4 ounces of Unrefined Shea Butter (I used Better Shea Butter’s Ivory – which I purchased on Amazon –

2. Add 1 ounce of Beauty by Earth Organic Argan Oil (

Essential Oil

3. Add 30-40 drops of your favorite essential oil (I used Aura Cacia Lavender –

4. If you would like to add additional oils, just ensure that your liquid oils do not exceed more than about 35% of your recipe formulation.

5. I melted all of  the oils down just slightly.  You just want them to be soft, so if it is warm where you are, you can entirely omit this step.  Use a double boiler – putting your glass bowl inside of a pot with boiling water.  Once you start to see some oil melting and your shea butter is soft, remove it from the heat.

Mixing Argan Oil into Shea Butter

6. Using your had mixer, whip your shea butter and oils together.  If you decide you want a stronger scent, add some additional essential oils.

7. Viola!  You are done.  Now rub that baby all over your dry skin.  I saved mine in a container for easy use.

  1. I followed your receipt but after awhile the oils started to melt. It does not look like body butter , it looks like creamy oil. Any thoughts on what went wrong?

    • Hi Candace, I would recommend that once you take it off the double boiler, either refrigerate it for a few minutes or let it sit on the counter and have the temperature come down a little. I hope that helps.

  2. I have found that if I put body butter on while my skin is moist (right out of the bath) it spreads easier and soaks in faster.

  3. Hi, I made this and it’s super greasy and hard to spread. Is that because I didn’t add enough oil, or because I didn’t whip it long enough? Would it improve the consistency if I added coconut oil?

    • Hi Hanna, Thanks for letting us know. Sounds like not enough oil and not whipped enough. It should be a light fluffy consistency. Temperature of the shea butter has a lot to do with how it whips. Make sure its nice and warm.

  4. You can also mix equal amounts of organic coconut oil,,which is thick but liquefies quickly on skin contact,,along with shea butter & argan oil. I would love to have the light and super rich quick absorbing abilities like Josie Maran’s,,,. I’m thinking that when I experiment again,,I’ll mix in the ever so small amount of arrowroot powder ,,for a natural skin friendly thickner so I’ll have a nice rich quick absorbing body cream.

  5. Is this greasy? Will it quickly dry? Iv’e tried to make 2 already and their either super greasy and won’t dry or they are very hard to spread. I have read a lot about argan oil and want to try it.

    • Hi Liz, Shea butter is always a little greasy to be honest. It sits on top of your skin and keeps it real moisturized. It should soak up, but it make take an hour or so.
